Summary:
This course develops the practical people-management skills required by new and aspiring Practice Managers to lead and support non-clinical teams effectively within general practice.
Delegates will explore the manager’s responsibilities across the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, induction, performance, attendance, development and difficult conversations. Particular attention will be given to the transition from colleague to manager and establishing clear expectations, professional boundaries and accountability.
The course also addresses the distinctive challenge of managing upwards within a GP partnership, helping delegates develop the confidence to communicate effectively with Partners, present recommendations, challenge constructively and manage situations where responsibility and authority do not always sit in the same place.
Course content:
- The manager’s role across the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, induction, probation, development and retention
- Setting expectations, delegation, accountability and managing individual and team performance
- Managing attendance, conduct and capability and approaching difficult conversations confidently and appropriately
- Building effective teams, supporting wellbeing, managing conflict and developing a positive workplace culture
- Managing upwards: working effectively with GP Partners, influencing decisions, presenting recommendations and constructively challenging where required
On completion of this course delegates will be able to (expected outcome):
- Apply effective people-management approaches across the employee lifecycle and respond appropriately to common workforce issues
- Hold clearer management conversations, establish expectations and address performance, attendance and behavioural concerns with greater confidence
- Build productive relationships with staff and GP Partners, using effective communication, influence and constructive challenge to support good practice management
