Summary:

This module introduces the distinctive leadership challenges associated with managing within a Primary Care Network and establishes the foundations for the wider PCN Management & Leadership Development Programme. 

Delegates explore the position of the PCN Manager within an increasingly complex primary care system and consider how leadership differs when working across multiple autonomous practices, professional groups and partner organisations. Particular attention is given to role clarity, accountability, organisational boundaries and the relationship between formal authority and influence. 

The session examines how PCN Managers can build credibility, establish effective relationships with Clinical Directors, practices and wider system partners, and provide leadership where responsibility may exceed direct organisational authority. Delegates are encouraged to reflect on their current role and identify practical opportunities to strengthen their leadership contribution within their own PCN. 

Course content:

• Explore what makes PCN management different from management within an individual practice, including the complexities created by multiple member practices, distributed accountability, shared services and relationships with wider system partners
• Determine the respective roles of the PCN manager, Clinical Director, member practices, Practice Managers, PCN workforce and system partners and consider where responsibility, accountability and influence sit across different PCN activities
• Explore how PCN Managers can lead effectively when they may not have direct hierarchical authority over the individuals or organisations required to deliver PCN priorities
• Consider how professional credibility, relationships, communication, consistency and organisational understanding influence the ability of the PCN Manager to lead across organisational boundaires
• Reflect on individual leadership strategies, challenges and behaviours and identify practical priorities for strengthening the strategic and leadership contribution of the PCN Manager
