Summary:
This introductory module establishes the foundations for the wider Leadership Development Programme and explores what effective leadership means within contemporary healthcare.
Delegates consider how approaches to leadership have evolved, the distinction between management and leadership, and why authentic and compassionate leadership behaviours are increasingly important within complex healthcare environments.
The session introduces leadership within a VUCA environment and explores the relationship between compassionate leadership, psychological safety, staff experience and organisational performance. Delegates are encouraged to reflect on their own leadership behaviours and establish personal development priorities that will inform their journey through the programme.
Course content:
- Explore the changing expectations placed upon healthcare leaders and the challenges associated with leading within increasingly complex, pressured and interconnected systems
- A concise exploration of the evolution of leadership thinking and the movement from hierarchical and directive approaches towards authentic, rational and compassionate leadership
- Determine the complementary but distinct functions of management and leadership, including operational delivery, direction-setting, engagement, influences and developing others
- Explore the behaviours associated with authentic and compassionate leadership and consider how leaders create trust, inclusion, engagement and psychological safety
- Consider leadership within volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environments and complete structured reflection/assessment to identify individual leadership strengths and development priorities
On completion of this course delegates will be able to (expected outcome):
- Explain how contemporary healthcare environments influence the leadership behaviours required of managers and leaders
- Apply principles of authentic and compassionate leadership to create greater trust, engagement and psychological safety
- Reflect critically on their current leadership approach and identify priorities for their personal development throughout the programme
