One of the greatest strengths of the Local Medical Committee network is that the voice of grassroots general practice can directly influence national policy. Over the coming weeks, I would encourage every GP in Avon to think about the challenges facing your practice, your patients and your teams, and consider whether these are issues that deserve to be debated nationally.

The annual England LMC Conference, taking place in November, is the principal policy-making conference for general practice in England. Representatives from LMCs across the country debate and vote on motions covering every aspect of general practice, from contractual issues and workload to workforce, premises, digital systems and patient care. The policies agreed at Conference go on to shape the negotiating priorities and mandate of GPC England, making it one of the most important opportunities each year for the profession to influence its future.

If there is something making your working day harder, creating unnecessary bureaucracy, affecting patient care or threatening the sustainability of general practice, we want to hear about it.

You do not need to have a perfectly worded motion. Simply tell us about the issue, and the Avon LMC team will work with you to develop it into a motion that can be submitted for consideration. Please email mandy@almc.co.uk with your ideas.

In early September, we will also be inviting our constituent GPs to stand-up for the practices in our area and attend the England LMC Conference and represent Avon LMC.

We are seeking practice views on potential approaches to collective action for shared care prescribing. Please review the attached SBAR, which outlines the background, current funding position, and the available options for consideration.

Responses will be collated to determine whether there is sufficient support for any coordinated action across BNSSG.

Please note: If a collective approach is agreed, involving withdrawal from or declining new shared care arrangements, a minimum of three months’ notice would need to be provided to the ICB before any changes could take effect.

Following a rise in local reports of vaccine cold chain breaches, our Director of Nursing has produced a new Cold Chain Breach Quick Reference Guide to help teams respond quickly and confidently. The resource outlines the immediate actions to take, how to assess affected vaccines, and where to access expert advice and national guidance, helping to reduce wastage, ensure vaccine safety and continuity of patient care.
