Wound & Leg Ulcer Management - Masterclass

Description:

 

Who Should Attend?

This study day is aimed at Nurses who already currently have some knowledge of wound care and should be familiar with the wound healing process and basic assessment of wounds.  The nurses should also have been caring for patients with leg ulcers but feel their skills need to be updated.

Learning Outcomes

This training is presented as a master class for nurses that already have some knowledge around assessment and management of wounds.  It seeks to update Nurses on current issues and changes in practice and build on current knowledge in terms of assessment and decision making in the management of wounds.  It explores cost effective and innovative dressings and the identification of indolent wounds, the causes and possible management strategies.

The leg ulcer management part of the day updates nurses on patient assessment who have been managing patients with leg ulcers.  The use of a mini leg ulcer assessment in leg ulceration and compression hose application.  Also covering unusual causes of ulceration.  Time will be set aside for a question and answer session at the end of the workshop.   Topics covered include:

  • Undertake a comprehensive and advanced assessment of wounds
  • Identify static wounds and factors that contribute to delayed healing
  • Recognise bacterial burden and infection in wounds
  • Have an up to date knowledge of wound care issues
  • Assess patients confidently, using leg ulcer assessment care-pathway
  • Identify unusual aetiologies
  • Understand the importance of hosiery in reducing reoccurrence.

Tips for managing our workplace stress

Short Facilitated discussion:  How stress manifests itself at work (this makes it acceptable - not shameful to admit to being stressed)

Link to aggressive behaviour and how this gets confused with assertiveness.

Card game to highlight this and stimulate a debate with learning points.

 

Top Tips for coping with workplace stress – explanation and facilitated discussion. Co coaching in pairs.

Understanding and Coping with Change

Brief discussion about how we cope with change using the DADA clock

Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern model,. Explanation and applying this to our workplace. This also covers the difference between consultation and being informed (ie not involved in the decision)

Working together

Team activity which only works if everyone works together and pools their information.

Facilitated discussion about which behaviours helped and hindered and how these align to our workplace behaviour.

The knowledge gained from this day enables safer practice which can reduce patient discomfort, speed up resolution and make referrals more appropriate. It enables nurses to take a more active role in the prevention of ear problems, thus saving general practitioner consulting time and prescribing costs.

Learning Outcomes

Attending this course the student with gain: An understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the ear. An understanding of the prevention of ear problems. Gain the knowledge which can be used to practice aural toilet, wax instrumentation and ear irrigation according to the attendees’ level of practice and competence. An improved understanding of people with hearing loss and hearing aids. Reflection on accountability and documentation. An understanding of decontamination of equipment. Considered the patient with ear problems holistically. The ability to undertake ear care within the boundaries and limits of their professional competence, responsibility and accountability. An understanding to complete achieved competencies as documented in the competency handbook, consistent with their individual level of skill and knowledge. These will be achieved through structured teaching, practical demonstrations, discussion and practical workshops. Certificates of attendance will be issued but the practitioner will need to complete competencies to enable safe practice.
