Safeguarding Level 2

Description:

Who Should Attend?

This training is aimed at nurses and support staff who undertake clinical tasks e.g. HCA's, Phlebotomists etc. The intercollegiate document 2010 highlights the training needs of all health staff and indicates the minimum level of training staff should have. Level 2 training should be a minimum of 2 - 3 hours every 3 years and cover a range of knowledge skills and competences.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this course is to raise awareness that Child protection training is everybody's business, and how you would recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns that impact on a child. The learning outcomes include:

Understand what constitutes child abuse.
To recognise and know the types of abuse.
To understand the 'Think Family Agenda'.
Know what to do when you are concerned a child is being abused.
Understand the next steps in the child protection process.
To implement the lessons learnt from Serious case reviews and child deaths

This training is suitable for HCA’s in Primary Care

Learning Outcomes

This practical and theory core skills training has been specifically designed for HCA’s in Primary Care who are developing their role in the care and management of patients.
By the end of this session Candidates will have gained the necessary knowledge and skills and having completed practical assessment and competencies at their work place - working from their Practice Protocols, will be able to carry out their role safely and effectively. Including undertaking of physiological measurements:

Temperature
Pulse
Respiration
Blood Pressure
Waist Circumference
BMI
Weight
Pulse oximetry
Blood glucose - theory
Urine Testing - (collection/handling/storage/transport) theory

Agenda

An understanding of:

Relevant Legislation/National Guidelines/Policies.
The physiological states that can be measured.
The preparation and undertaking of physiological measurements.
The recording and reporting of results.
The major factors that influence changes in physiological measurements.
A few common conditions which require recording of physiological measurements.
Specimen Procedures - collection/labelling/packing/storage/transport.

NB Candidates need to bring relevant equipment to this session – thermometer/sphygmomanometer -aneroid & digital/stethoscope/measuring tape.
Alcohol wipes.

This interactive session will include group discussion.

The Sick Child

Description:

Using a case study based approach, this study day uses collaborative learning to underpin an evidence based approach to the diagnosis and management of acute illness in children.
Suitable for nurses, pharmacists and those working in acute/out of hours settings in the community, the structure of the day also enables you to network with colleagues and counts as 6 hours of CPD for your revalidation.

By the end of this course attendees will:

• Be aware of the principles behind effective history taking and assessment of the sick child.
• Recognise important red flags which may present in paediatric acute illness.
• Be able to implement evidence based care for the acutely ill child and initiate appropriate referral

Ear Care Update

Description:

Who Should Attend?

Nurses and HCAs who have done Ear Care training.

This study day is intended to give the practitioner more confidence when dealing with ear problems.

The knowledge gained from this day enables safer practice which can reduce patient discomfort, speed up resolution and make referrals more appropriate. It enables nurses to take a more active role in the prevention of ear problems, thus saving general practitioner consulting time and prescribing costs.

Learning Outcomes

Attending this course the student will gain:

  • An understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the ear.
  • An understanding of the prevention of ear problems.
  • Gain the knowledge which can be used to practice aural toilet, wax instrumentation and ear irrigation according to the attendees’ level of practice and competence.
  • An improved understanding of people with hearing loss and hearing aids.
  • Reflection on accountability and documentation.
  • An understanding of decontamination of equipment.
  • Considered the patient with ear problems holistically.
  • The ability to undertake ear care within the boundaries and limits of their professional competence, responsibility and accountability.
  • An understanding to complete achieved competencies as documented in the competency handbook, consistent with their individual level of skill and knowledge. These will be achieved through structured teaching, practical demonstrations, discussion and practical workshops.

Wound & Leg Ulcer Management - Masterclass

Description:

Who Should Attend?

This study day is aimed at Nurses who already currently have some knowledge of wound care and should be familiar with the wound healing process and basic assessment of wounds.  The nurses should also have been caring for patients with leg ulcers but feel their skills need to be updated.

Learning Outcomes

This training is presented as a master class for nurses that already have some knowledge around assessment and management of wounds.  It seeks to update Nurses on current issues and changes in practice and build on current knowledge in terms of assessment and decision making in the management of wounds.  It explores cost effective and innovative dressings and the identification of indolent wounds, the causes and possible management strategies.

The leg ulcer management part of the day updates nurses on patient assessment who have been managing patients with leg ulcers.  The use of a mini leg ulcer assessment in leg ulceration and compression hose application.  Also covering unusual causes of ulceration.  Time will be set aside for a question and answer session at the end of the workshop.   Topics covered include:

  • Undertake a comprehensive and advanced assessment of wounds
  • Identify static wounds and factors that contribute to delayed healing
  • Recognise bacterial burden and infection in wounds
  • Have an up to date knowledge of wound care issues
  • Assess patients confidently, using leg ulcer assessment care-pathway
  • Identify unusual aetiologies
  • Understand the importance of hosiery in reducing reoccurrence.
