Summary:
This practical module develops coaching as a core leadership capability and encourages delegates to move away from automatically solving problems for others towards developing capability, ownership and independent thinking within their teams.
Delegates explore the distinction between coaching and mentoring before learning a structured coaching approach using the GROW model. Particular emphasis is placed on attentive listening, powerful questioning, goal setting and feedback
Through repeated coaching practice, delegates develop the confidence to use coaching techniques within everyday leadership conversations.
Course content:
- Explore the principles and benefits of coaching leadership and identify when coaching is – and is not – an appropriate intervention
- Understand the differences between coaching, mentoring, advising, directing and managing and determine when each approach is appropriate
- Apply Goal, Reality, Options and Will/Way Forward to structure effective development conversations
- Develop attentive listening, observations, purposeful silence and powerful questioning techniques
- Use effective goal-setting and feedback approaches to translate coaching conversations into clear commitments and action
On completion of this course delegates will be able to (expected outcome):
- Distinguish between coaching, mentoring, advising and directing and select an appropriate approach for different leadership situations
- Conduct structured coaching conversations using the GROW model, attentive listening and powerful questioning
- Support colleagues to establish meaningful goals, identify their own solutions and take greater ownership of their development
