Project Management – Project Management Fundamentals (Virtual)

Summary: 

This introductory module establishes the foundations for the wider Project Management in General Practice Programme and provides delegates with a practical framework for managing projects within a primary care environment. 

Delegates explore what constitutes a project, how project activity differs from business-as-usual operational management, and the key stages through which a project progresses from initial idea or problem through to implementation, review and closure. 

The session introduces practical approaches to defining the problem, establishing clear objectives, agreeing scope, identifying deliverables and establishing appropriate project roles and governance. Delegates will apply these principles to realistic General Practice scenarios and begin developing a structured Project Charter that can be used within their own organisation. 

 

Course content:

  • Explore what constitutes a project and distinguish project activity from operational management and business-as-usual activity, using examples drawn from practice and PCN environments
  • Introduce a practical project lifecycle of Identify ? Define ? Plan ? Deliver ? Review ? Embed, considering what needs to happen at each stage and common reasons why projects fail
  • Develop clear problem and opportunity statements, SMART objectives, deliverables and success measures to ensure projects address the right problem before solutions are selected
  • Define what is in and out of scope, identify constraints, assumptions and dependencies, and establish appropriate responsibilities using sponsor, project manager, project team and RACI principles
  • Bring the core components together within a practical General Practice Project Charter, providing a structured foundation from which planning and delivery can begin

 

On completion of this c0urse delegates will be able to (expected outcome):

  • Distinguish projects from business-as-usual activity and explain the key stages of an effective project lifecycle
  • Translate an operational problem or improvement opportunity into a clearly defined project with appropriate objectives, scope, deliverables and success measures
  • Develop a proportionate Project Charter establishing the purpose, governance and responsibilities required to progress a General Practice project
